All animals, like people, are different. Some with joy and delight accept everything new. Others worry even because of a slight variation from the usual way of life.
No matter how we convince ourselves, moving to a new place is always stressful. Moving with pets is double stress when two people are nervous at once – both you and your pet. Use the tips and life hacks that we have prepared for you so that you and your pet can avoid it or at least minimize it.
Prepare your pet for the move before the day of the move.
- Try to do all the noisy operations in advance so that nothing will cause additional stress to the animal in the first days of life in the new space.
- Check and block all hard-to-reach places where the animal will most likely strive to climb immediately after moving (ventilation, cracks, gaps, voids under cabinets, and a bathroom).
- If possible, come with your pet to a new room in advance, gradually increasing the time spent there, transferring some of his things or familiar objects progressively. On the day of the move, your pet will feel more comfortable.
- You may want to use a carrier when you move. You should also prepare your pet for it in advance! You can even put a bowl of food in the carrier and feed your pet right in it. If the animal stubbornly does not want to go into the carrier, then place the bowl next to it, each time decreasing the distance.
- Make a list of your pet’s essentials ahead of time, so you don’t miss anything. Include in this list: a tray, litter, bowls, veterinary supplies, collars, beds, cages, toys, and a supply of familiar food and favorite treats.
- Moving with cats and dogs is different from moving with reptiles, birds and other more exotic animals. If this is your case, take special precautions. Be sure to consult a veterinarian who will tell you the procedure for transporting your pet.

Perhaps the most important when moving with a pet is the calmness of its owner. You cannot be immune to stress and anxiety during the move’s preparation and process. However, it is essential to remember that the animal will not understand the cause of your anxiety. So if you want to keep your pet calm, start with yourself first. The easiest way out for those who value comfort is to shift maximum worries onto professional mover’s shoulders. For example, the moving company Earth Relo will help you pack your belongings, disassemble and assemble furniture, move your property to a new apartment, and even put things in their places. You have to watch the process or take a walk with your pet.

How to act correctly on the day of moving
- On the day of moving, it is optimal to leave your pet with your family or friends. Alternatively, if your pet loves grooming procedures, you can sign up for a grooming session (grooming and hygiene of animals). This eliminates the risk that the pet will get nervous or get lost in the move’s hustle and bustle. And you will feel calmer on a crucial day.
- Talk to the animal. In this case, special attention should be paid to intonation. Speak calmly and positively. The sound vibrations will cheer your pet up.
- In a panic, your pet may simply run away. Therefore, do not forget to put on a collar or harness with your contact information, if you have not done so before.
- Do not give sedatives to your pet unless prescribed by a doctor.
- When moving the animal to a new building, do not pull it out of the carrier yourself! Let him get used to it and get used to it. The pet itself will go to explore new territory when it is ready.
- In your new home, offer your pet water and food first. Give water in excess, but feed in moderation.
After the move, try to maintain your pet’s feeding schedule and things. Use old bowls and a tray that smells familiar. If you always walk your pet 2 times a day before moving, do not break this tradition. In short, do not change the rules established earlier, immediately after the move.
At least the first time, try to spend as much time as possible with your pet. It is essential that the pet feels comfortable in a new place and does not run away, searching for an old and familiar home.
Pets are not only a joy, but also a responsibility. Take care of your pets and try to protect them from stress. We hope that our list of tips will help you get around the difficulties you might encounter when moving your pet.
